Study: Japan To Have One Surname By 2531 and 22 People Alive By 3310

Tohoku University in Japan conducted a study that has revealed some shocking findings. The study reveals that “if current family name trends continue, then all the people living in Japan by 2531 will have the surname ‘Sato’.”

The Research Center for Aged Economy and Society of Tohoku University has conducted the study, reported TimesNow.

Currently, the marriage surname law prevailing in Japan requires either of the couples involved in marriage to adopt one family name. Thus, the couple must adopt either the wife’s or the husband’s last name.

‘Soto’ Surname to Prevail in Japan

According to a Japanese Daily, The Mainichi, the story was done by the Research Center of the university, running a simulation. Moreover, it features that if the prevailing surname trends continue without any change in law or legislation then “Sato,” the current most common surname of Japan would be adopted by the entire population of the country.

The Guardian reported that, “Sato” surname is currently kept by 1.529% of the entire population. Thus, by the year 2531, it will become the last name of the entire Japan.

Sky News also put forth a report on the study, in which the survey was led by Hiroshi Yoshida. As per the outcomes of the survey, the study will come into reality in 2531 for the entire nation if no amendments in legislation occurs.

If everyone in the nation had the same surname, then identifying them would be a tough task, due to which people will be called/referred to or regarded by numbers or their first names only.

The study has also demonstrated another shocking and alarming finding. As per the study, if the current “population decline” continues, then by 3310, only 22 people would be left in the island nation.
