Viral What’s Wrong With India Trend on Twitter and Reddit

A number of Indian X users started a blitzkrieg by posting pictures of people defecating in the open and bathing in a metro with the satirical comment “What’s wrong with India?” shortly after the trend hit the social media platforms Twitter and Reddit.

The Indian users showed the people from the so-called civilized and developed world a mirror with the same instances for which India was derided and joked about.

Even the Government of India citizen engagement portal MyGovIndia participated in it.

The trend started after a Spanish tourist Fernanda 4ever was gang-raped and robbed in an incident in Jharkhand’s Dumka 10 days ago.

The deplorable incident created massive outrage on social media, with many tourists highlighting their unpleasant traveling experiences in India.

However, the incident was used by a section of society to tarnish the image of India, and it was alleged that such incidents are commonplace in India.

India was labeled as the rape capital of the world.

People also lost no time in labeling India as a place inhabited by people with improper hygiene habits and an unsafe place, especially for tourists.

Many of the posts were shared with the message “What’s wrong with India?”

Many users are blaming the X algorithm for the trend and its unusual popularity among users.

Some even blame the liberals and the leftists, who they allege control the X media platform and claimed that the platform’s algorithms supported anti-India comments.

There could be some substance in the allegations because even users who had less than 300 followers got over one lakh views.

The citizen engagement platform shared pictures of 4 news reports from reputed media houses showcasing the development made by the nation in the last few years.

The news reports highlighted the eradication of extreme poverty from India, the landing of a spacecraft on the South Pole of the moon, the labeling of the Indian economy as the fastest-growing economy by none other than the IMF chief, and the advancement made in the digital infrastructure.

The Indian Government usually does not get involved in any such media trends but had to after it became clear that there was a deliberate campaign to malign the image of India by some Western social media accounts.

These media accounts painted India as a nation where rape, beggars, and drug trafficking are rampant. However, the Indian users struck back in full force and posted pictures of such happenings in Western countries also.

Possible Origin of “What’s Wrong With India?” Trend

The genesis of the trend “What is wrong with India?” can be traced back to a user who talked about the poor hygienic quality of street food in India. Soon, other users started commenting on a number of negative happenings in India, ranging from women’s safety issues to hygiene.
